As is often the case, I offended a bunch of people with my writing yesterday (Open letter to gullible parents – 2026 could be your year!).
Some, including one person I really admire, felt that my article – which suggested 2026 could be the year that gullible parents learn to think critically – was mean-spirited and that I was ridiculing and shaming people just for thinking differently from me.
However, it is not people thinking differently that troubles me; it is when they do not think critically.
I have never had a problem with someone doing a little research, conducting even simple objective analysis, and arriving at a different conclusion from me. That happens regularly with people in my life, and I always respect opinions based on the results of critical thinking.
However, when someone’s opinion on crucial matters is based on the words of a politician, medical official, climate change crusader, or the talking heads from their favourite news organization, I have a BIG problem with it. The words of the so-called experts are routinely driven by ulterior agendas that have little or nothing to do with truth or the common good.
That is precisely why a group of scientists, engineers, mathematicians and I started BIG Media Ltd. We wanted people to have at least one trustworthy platform to which they could turn for facts and critical context on important matters.
Some parents say that they are too busy to conduct research and engage in critical thought. Well, those folks in particular should love BIG Media. I have seven children who I care about deeply. And I care about your kids, too.
If I see your child running into traffic, I will sprint after them and attempt to prevent an accident. If I see someone trying to abduct your child, I will do everything I can to stop it from happening.
And if I see you making decisions based on (often dangerous) disinformation, I will do all I can to prevent you from harming your children through blind faith in agenda-driven officials.
I will always give you the straight goods, and I will pull no punches. Even if it insults you. Even if it makes you furious with me.
But you should not be mad at me. You should be angry at those who have lied to you.
