Biden expands Mexican border wall — but can it stop crossings?

(BBC News) At first glance, Starr County in Texas is a quiet place. Its gently rolling hills are blanketed with low-growing mesquite and shrubs intersected by small gullies and streams, and many of its small, sleepy towns seem plucked from old westerns. But the US border with Mexico is never far off. On peaceful days in towns like Roma, residents and visitors can clearly hear loud chatting, children playing, or roosters crowing across the Rio Grande. For...

Speaker debacle plunges U.S. politics into uncertainty

(Al Jazeera Media Network) The next speaker of the United States House of Representatives will face a gruelling task: maintaining near unanimous support among a divided Republican caucus while reaching agreements with Democrats to fund the government. Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy found out the hard way that the two jobs can be at odds with one another. When he struck a deal with Democrats to temporarily fund the government on Saturday, he sparked a Republican backlash that culminated...

Trump bids to have election interference charges dismissed

(BBC News) Ex-president Donald Trump has asked a federal court to dismiss the election interference case against him, arguing his role entitled him to "absolute immunity". Trump's lawyers say his attempts to cast doubt on the 2020 election fell within his duties as president and are not subject to criminal prosecution. The claims were "at the heart of his official responsibilities," they argue. Separately, Trump has asked for a delay in his classified documents case. Trump's attorneys have...

Both were told locks on their office doors will be "re-keyed" on Wednesday. The evictions come after Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the chamber's plum post on Tuesday and McHenry, a top loyalist, was appointed in the interim. Pelosi, who is not currently in Washington, criticized the decision as "a...

McCarthy ousted as House Speaker

(BBC News) Kevin McCarthy has been toppled in a right-wing revolt — the first time that a US House of Representatives Speaker has lost a no-confidence vote.  The final tally was 216-210 to remove the congressman as leader of the Republican majority in the lower chamber of Congress. Hardliners in his party voted against him after he struck a deal with Senate Democrats to fund government agencies. There is no clear successor to oversee the House Republican...

Biden vows to stand by Ukraine after Congress excludes military funding

(BBC News) President Joe Biden has vowed continued U.S. support for Ukraine, after further military funding was excluded from a last-minute congressional budget deal. The temporary measure, pushed through to avert a government shutdown, did not include $6 billion in military aid for Kyiv — a top White House priority. Hardline Republicans oppose further military aid, with many openly opposing Biden's approach to the war. But on Sunday, Biden said Ukraine could "count on" U.S. support. "We cannot,...

U.S. urges Serbia to de-escalate in wake of large military mobilization near Kosovo

(Al Jazeera Media Network) The United States has urged Belgrade to pull its forces back from the border with Kosovo after detecting what it called an “unprecedented” Serbian military build-up. Serbia has deployed sophisticated tanks and artillery near the frontier with Kosovo after deadly clashes erupted at a monastery in northern Kosovo last weekend, the White House warned on Friday. The violence – in which a Kosovar police officer and three Serb gunmen were killed – marked one...
