(BBC News) Iran has launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel in a retaliatory attack.
Sirens and loud explosions have been heard as Israel’s air defences intercept objects.
The US has also shot down Iranian drones that were headed towards Israel, military officials say.
RAF jets in the region will “intercept any airborne attacks within range” of its existing missions, the UK says, as Defence Minister Grant Shapps condemns the “senseless attack”.
Iran had warned that Israel would be “punished” for a strike on its consulate in Syria on April 1.
Seven Revolutionary Guards, including two generals, and six Syrians were killed in the Damascus attack, which Israel has not officially acknowledged.
President Biden has been briefed in the White House and says the US will “do all we can to protect Israel’s security.”
Iran had avoided direct confrontation with Israel, but the Damascus attack was seen as a serious escalation, and this is the first time it has targeted Israel from Iranian soil.
