“Apathy can be overcome by enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things: first, an ideal, with takes the imagination by storm, and, second, a definite intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice.”
– Arnold J. Toynbee
There is no shortage of signals that North American society is spiralling toward utter chaos.
The chasm between the left and right grows wider and deeper by the day. Whether it is Democrats vs Republicans, Liberals vs Conservatives, or alarmists citing an existential crisis of anthropogenic climate change vs those who claim humans are causing nary a scratch on the surface of the natural evolution of Earth’s climate – the vitriol accelerates at a frightening pace.
And while the ill-informed on both extremes fill social media platforms with verbal diarrhea, the folks in the middle grow increasingly constipated. The buildup of crap they ingest from a steady diet of rotten media reports is causing great discomfort among the middle ground. Some have been silenced by bombastic bullies online, others find the Soap Opera that is the 21st Century rather amusing, and many have thrown up their hands in disgust. Far too many have moved in the direction of apathy.
I understand the urge to stick our heads in the sand, and let it all play out. However, the stakes are too high. Those who care about truth, integrity, and harmony need to fight apathy, and the best way to do it is through enthusiastic action.
